"That is not the look I've know you to have when meeting friends," said Drango, his tail waving about. "Let us go inside, begin our game, and I surely hope you'll share your thoughts with me. For it would seem something is troubling you." He came up to Lady Mie and offered a hug.

Mie was oddly quiet then said "yes" They sat down and mie dropped a bombshell. "For the first time since unification we have targeted out boomers and orbital systems." She said dejected. "It's all going terribly wrong. Our atomic weapons are for the first time targeted, that can not be good.
What the hell* is it with these people, one article in a paper and they go nuts. One act by a one association and they want to go to war. is there anyone but you sane in the north?"
She went quiet "I should not rant, you are one of the few friends I and my nation have right now."
--- *Probably the first time Drango has heard Mie swear.

Drango twisted his face as if in thought for a moment. The board was between them but neither seemed interested in moving pieces quite yet.
"I've been watching the news yes. But I'm not privy to intel reports and things like that. Perhaps I can give a sense of what my fellow country furs are thinking.
"In our early days, after the Union began, we were threatened a number of times by half the planet it seems like. Some of it was our fault. People don't much like dealing with a country that has a program to direct folks to work in foreign countries for the purpose of moving capital back home. Other times it was stands by belligerent folks based on ideology. That Nixon guy hated us for instance.
"But somehow we're still here. I guess we've figured that in a violent, uncertain world, that sometimes you have to put up with crazies calling you the scum of the earth, enemy of life, and a threat to all they hold dear. Despite not really having done anything. We were grouped with the soviets and China for years, and still are at times but idiots. We are still worried that the Aneans might try to toss something at the city over the whole flap. But I... I don't think it will happen. You got some good people working on your side. And despite the rhetoric, I'm sure they do to. I hope."
Drango moved a paw forward to move a pawn. "Rhetoric, violence or passive, is all part of the dynamic game that the powers of the world, and I guess beyond, play. The Aneans are from another galaxy. They should be used to dealing with alien ways, even if from what I understand they're all tied up in some sort of monolithic imperial system. But if the Union of Tinis can get along with Shikeishuu, I'm sure the tensions between your peoples and theirs will eventually become less hazardous."

Mie smiled "You know I know that gambit.
But you are right, the days before the commonwealth were like that. But the commonwealth is young, it will take us time to find exactly where we are in the world."
She shrugged "By the way the other northern nations are opening embassies in Queen Square. It might be helpful for you if you move from your current place as well...you have a serous dry rot problem there. Up to your guys."
Then she smiled "To more happy topics. When would you like the hand over to happen? The city is nearing completion and well...perhaps it takes a little time to organise a party and ceremony that would befit the place.
You see we have never done a hand over the closest we have was declaring Tel as the place that we would use as out talking place. When we unified the ceremony and celebrations were improvised."
As she moved one of her knights knowing that Drango always made a cautious opening she tilted her head, her tail twitched "I doubt your people would be so happy with that."
Mie knew that the odds were the new city would have more explosives in it that the naval base if the commonwealth and partners had time, in the way of fire works. It would be a massive spectacular show, they were looking already at hundreds of tonnes, may be the first mega tonne display.

"Heh, correct. Always have to get the planners setting up the right banners and all that. I guess despite it being so close, the first of October should be ideal. Not to cold yet, and plenty dry."
Drango moved his own knight to counter.
"You know, for a while I've been thinking about the role of nations. My own is kind of obvious, great compromiser for good or ill. But I guess I see Cal as sort of the cool younger brother.
"Think about it. A culturally diverse, and in some ways confusing place, that likes to rumble, is at its heart fairly care free, kind of reckless, and wants you to give it money, heh," he joked. "I kid of course. But perhaps the collection of peoples of Cal and the islands are smarter than people like me and you think, and they already have a plan that we don't understand quite yet. A citizenry is a force that few can even begin to understand. They'll figure out the role. Just need a little time is all.
"I just hope this rapidly changing world gives it to them."

Mie smiled "Change is one thing we know how to handle, you should know that. As for carefree and reckless, you can blame the teerie infuriate for that. Then again have you ever talked to one?
They hide their intelligence well, I think they have realised that nothing is forever and just to enjoy the now. They manage to be both deep and shallow at once, never bowed and when they have common cause indestructible, but at the same time silly, disorganised and carefree. Every nation should have a people like them, we are just lucky to have them, though at times I wish we didn't."
Mie laughed.
"The thing is the older nations knew there place in the world, now they are together they are trying to find where they are as a group united. " Mie mused.
"Oh it's your move, we will have to organise all the hand overs. It will take the day to get all the ceremonies out the way, the police, the military, the justice lot, your know."
Mie thought for a second then said "The 1st is not a good day, the moon is waning, I am not a religious person, but why temp the goddesses. the 8th is a quarter day and a new moon.If my memory serves it is also quite a prestigious day in both out calendars, so perhaps it?"
Mei shrugged "Though I am a little out of touch with which holidays you celebrate up here now, if I'm honest"

Drango moved. "The 8th should be fine. Holidays, well I can't say I'm very religious, so I miss out on a lot of those. I guess there's always Union day, but that's not for a bit yet. And there's always the equinoxes and solstices. Lots of people have parties for those mostly because its a good excuse to. I like them due to getting a day off."
He smirked. "Of course there's all the obscure holidays that people don't really celebrate or remember. Like who really remember Obrias Liberation day?"

Mie laughed "I thought there were about a dozen of those, the place did seem to get invaded a lot. Then again my lot can talk, the sisterhood have taken to doubling up on blessed persons days* as they have more blessed persons that there are days in the year."
She tilted her head in thought.
"If you took all of them off you would never go to work and they would owe you time off at the end of the year...Hmm I might just get religious." she smiled.
Mie nodded "So the 8th it is, well in your calender, it's the 1st in ours, but seems like a good idea."
She move rook's pawn two forwards.
She thought "That is a little more aggressive that he usually is, I think something is getting at him."
Then another thought hit her "Damn and blast." she exclaimed.
"I'm going to have to set up an event committee...right who do I hate, they can go on it. Who are you planning to dump on it?" Mie muttered.
The thing was event committee's tended to be filled by people that were the jumped up, self important, picky, bureaucracy loving prats, as no one really tended to care about exactly were X sat or the colour of Y. Thus they tended to dump who ever kept bugging them into these kind of committees to keep them out of the way so real work could get done. The fact was these tended to be the kind of people that would argue for days over the colour of a napkin, but while they were doing that the real people who did the work would have figured everything out.
IE the second would actually make things happen, usually ignoring the firsts...well except on the rare occasion that they had actually agreed something that wasn't totally impossible.
--- OOC: Hmm might be a thread in this....send you biggest prat that your gov can't fire but don't want to put as far way from any where that they can actually do damage, but will make them feel important.

He chuckled. "I know a couple city councilors who would love the work and the prestige. And it would even look bipartisan, which is a bonus these days. Maybe send along someone from the local artist commune or something as well to make sure they have someone useful around."
Drango moved his queen, but not to anywhere it was causing a problem quite yet.
"One of them is El Mragistev. You might of seen her on the news the other day at the opening of a mini-mart or something. Real media freak. The other is Lak Bilroll, a real dork, and likes to hear himself talk. It would help if he's behind the scenes so that we can point out that he shouldn't be speaking at the event and instead making sure things run smoothly. You got anyone in mind?"
[Sorry for the slowness of my replies of late, rl has been kind of dominating... and I'm a person whom likes to dominate it! Meep!]

OOC: Nay probs, RL has no hacks I have found so far.
Mie smiled "A few...I will talk to the lucan council...well some of them."
She moved a knight to challenge the queen, a safe move, the queen could not take them and the trade would make sense.
"But to other matters, is your government happy with the set up? If a leek happened now would it help or hinder your gov and more to the point would your people like the proclamation?"
Mie's tail twitched.
"So we are agreed? That is what I will say? The people of Tinis will like it, or at least not dislike it?" she asked honestly.
"You know you could stand to be lord provost of this city..well not directly, it would make things balanced, well if you could win a ward....you might be the guy they would go with.
I think they would like a natural, I don't know how your party would take it as you would having to deal with parties your party has never faced...but I think you might like it." mie smirked.
Mie smiled "I would much rather have weekly meetings with you than some faceless politician."

Drango nodded. "There isn't anything that all the people of Tinis will ever agree upon. I'm pretty sure there's at least a couple that don't think this gravity thing is a good idea. But they're a smart, if stubborn people. I think they'll be in the mood to be happy enough with the latest wording."
Drango weighted the options of his move. He could trade knights easily enough and the balance of the game wouldn't be changed. He could withdraw his queen, tossing away the half brained strategy he had been working on, or he could look for a new way to move forward.
"If I were to take a position in the city, I'd have to leave Semita behind. Spent a good number of years there. And no guarantee that whom ever replaces me will be so kind or open to being friendly. Though I can say the rumors of the rise of the extreme side of the NPP might be exaggerated, so I'm doubtful an isolationist ass would find their way in."
Drango nodded. He went for the knight exchange.

Mie flipped her tail, her position was apolitical but she would, most likely, be entrusted with the well being of the city.
She thought for a second looking at the move, apparently. She didn't trade, but made a different move. The fact of the matter was that she could easily beat Drango, but she was always playing a bigger game, longer term game. It was never good to humiliate a friend in anyway, so she was going to lose this game, but not by much. That took real skill.
She looked up and smiled "Have you noticed something?"
She continued "Neither the parties from your nation or those from back home are moving. They are in a Mexican stand off.
The parties from back home want to keep there powder dry for the up coming election. Your don't want, I suspect, to take on the far better financed from my nation. Well that and the reputation of our parties to go for the leaders reputations even in the smallest of contests. I think they know our elections are on one level clean, but dirty as hell when it comes to the politics."
I think neither want to become involved."
She smirked "An isolationist might have trouble taking your place. Considering that the city's air port has minimal maintainance facilities and hanger space. So they can expect airlines to be looking for places put their craft over night and maintain them, tourism and well the three stadiums might interest them...how often do you get international matches up here?
They might have retoric but people tend to look after themselves before ideas when they draw that cross..or what ever they do."
She tilted her head "If I recall there are a good number of rugby fans that would be more than a little put out if they couldn't go and see an international because so politician had shut the border and they could hear the game.
The offer is open and you could stand for the council, if you didn't win the ward keep. You could your job where you are for a little. But if you got on there you would be the one to beat, the commonwealth population is keen for the lord Provenst to be a tinisian. I figure your people are as keen in the city, it would kinda balance the place.
Stand as an independent, I think everyone else will be."

Drango smiled. "I'm pretty sure if I was replaced by an isolationist they'd be powerless to influence boarder crossing policy. They'd just be really annoying.
"Running as an indie can go both ways with Tinisians. Some love it, some hate it, but I'm kind of a known entity as is." Drango took a move. Not a very good one, but there were certainly worse ones. "And given things might be strange for a bit with people trying to have parties from both our countries, it would probably be a good way to establish that things are kind of going to work different here then in either place."
Drango leaned back a bit. "I don't want to make a decision on something this big right now of course. But... it does seem kind of appealing. There's a few folks I should speak to first of course. Don't want to suddenly leave good friends in a weird position as is."

Mie smiled "You can cushion the blow, you could dring in one of the other parties as your successor. You know a moderate. That would confuse the rest and well taking a seat on the council from a ward mostly of people from your city would make you look like you were looking after them...You don't have to live there, but I know you would want to and I think they know that too."
She moved a knight into an obviously easy undefended place.
The smiled "This place needs stability, in an unstable north."
She purred "My Lord Provost...I would prefer to spend an hour a week talking with you, that I trust than."
She sighed "This is half a tinisian project, all in all. If you will not do it for me...do it for your nation and the north."

Drango took the knight.
"Even in our most rebellious, Tinis tends towards stability. Its like we're a gas. Always finding an equilibrium no matter what heat or pressure we find ourselves with. But to make things easier, don't be calling me Lord Provost yet. I'm am leaning towards a yes, but as I said, I can't give a firm answer quite yet."
Drango leaned back and smiled. "And an hour weekly meeting with you does seem like it would be part of the job description as is. More chess could be had. Though all the same, you seem to be letting me do better then I usually do today. I hope you don't keep that up."
