I was planning on starting the student flat in Cal with a made up convo, but neamat has suggest we do it for real. So if you are interested in real time role playing it be on EFnet #furfed at about 21:00 (UTC, (GMT)) on monday and I'll just post the log.
I can't do that much latter as I have to be up at silly AM due to me current job...I could do 05:00 (UTC) I suppose on Tuesday but that's up to you guys/girls/what ever else.

Right as there have been no objections Monday night it is (well for me), if you can't make it you can claim to have been lurking or picked it up later. The reason for IRC is it is likely to be one of the few universal protocols (well IRC or something similar). So for the logs to look authentic it makes sense. We meet in #furfed and I'll create a channel (probably #meep) that people may have been talking crap in to make it look better, keep ooc stuff to #furfed. Right notes: None of the people have met unless they say otherwise. So reactions on people not being what your char thought they were would be fun. The thread is about day to day politics of a bunch of people from diverse cultures winding up in a flat. So the arguments are more likely to be about who's turn it is to clean the bog and other such day to day mundane things. Along with who gets on with who, who falls out and who is trying to get into who's pants. I will spin, providing Ciata doesn't object, Chu in as the only Ciataen member of the flat. With him will come the other Calie chars from exchanging classes, as since it is based in Cal it makes sense that a good number of the flats residence will be Calie. Other notes: Cal has no motorway network as due the until recently lack of fossil fuels cars never took off. They also have very few filling stations and they are all in the rural hinterland, not in the cities. Cal has an excellent public transport system and Trams are free though people might prefer to use a bike. Public transport runs 24/7 between and in the major cities. Lactia international outside Tel, is pretty much Cals only long haul airport, but it has a mag-lev link to Tels main station and you can get the CAT from there...chu did the trip here furfed.proboards36.com/index.cgi?board=events&action=display&thread=1176309687&page=1#1177632771Most bars provide soft drinks, coffee like drinks and food, there is more of a pub culture than a cafe culture. There are no set opening times for businesses, they open when it is profitable to do so. So some places are 24/7 some are not. I just depends on when it's worth them opening. So if you char is likely to be arriving very early in the morn they can probably find some food. The flat is in Liye Andrac, the Teuie capital which is warm and wet, see the exchanging classes thread for a description. Feel free to do an introduction post as to how you char got to Liye Andrac from home.

Dweizal was a brown lizard of multiethnic background. Disqualified from being considered a miracle because as it turns out, Obaarci and Dincotians both have 10 chromasomes and can regularly mate with resultant offspring. As a result he was a brown raptor with large black panel-like scales running down his back where feathers normally would be. He wore very narrow thin-frame glasses and pants made from hemp fiber. His all-earthtone appearance was broken up by the bright red backpack, and the glossy black computer case he brought with him.
It was a simple flight, from Parker Ulrich Intercontinental Airport in Atrias which could have just taken maybe 3 or 4 hours. But to save money, the University sent him on the cheaper roundabout flight which went to several airports in KZ, and layover in Port Mason and then back to the south for a layover in Rohomeo then finally the plane departed for Cal. What would otherwise be a 4-hour trip ended up being 10 hours in transit.
A few tram rides and some threats later and he had found himself at the apartment. It wasn't his first time in Cal, but it was his first residency here.
He took his enterance exam prior to arriving this time, of course that time, it was a 5 hour train ride and a 3 hour ferry ride followed by a 1 hour CAT train ride in Cal. The last part was speedy, but also the least comfortable due to tailspace.
For the exam, he brought in a strange organicly-shaped material stretched upon an aluminum frame and several colorfield paintings. He was told it was very 'deconstructivist' and let in.
Trailing behind him was his plastic-hard-side chest, covered with stickers declaring things like: 'keep the internet open and free' and such.

Right Flat Tails is the thread, the log is up there, if you missed it, you found out later and as for IRC convos being used...well the idea was to start with an IRC type convo with a bunch of people that have never seen each other. Writting one would never have the amount of general confusion caused by lag and misscomunication and would have taken for ever.
So neamat suggested the obvious...have one and from the looks of the log it is as authentic as could be...tinis even times out and no one pays attention to it.
As for future use of IM or IRC...up to the rest of you....I quiet liked it and it might make some convos easier....but I won't be organising a mass one.
Oh yeah I could ppl move their IC stuff over there.

Right I have a plan of the flat now, here and a side view as the roof is sloping . NotesThe inner corridor is open to the elements as it just has arches between it and the open air. More of a cloister than a hall, but it does have heavy wooden shutters should the weather get a bit nasty. The wall on the inside is about three foot thick so is very sitable on. You are four stories up The link to the stair turns out to be a draw bridge. All the doors open outwards. The utility room has two washing machines, a large sink and a chest freezer. There are two fridges in the kitchen area. The flat is unfurnished, but they have furniture in one of the basements, the building is built on a slop so the stairs go down a fair bit. There are winch points so anyone with seance will use an electric winch to move stuff up. All of the bedrooms have an arch in the middle holding the very heavy roof up, sloping armour before it's day. Basically enough to separate a study from the bedroom. These are very old buildings so right angles are an interesting idea.....but they don't exist in the building. They have done all the subsiding they are going to. There is a reason why the windows are large and the lip of the sill is just the right hight for a cannon and is wide enough to accommodate two. Also the inside wall is just the right high for a musket man to crouch behind. I think that's everything. Oh yeah it's a very airy despite it's obviously massive construction. Like all the lands it's basically a small castle and the stairs to the place were screwed for a reason. Oh yeah the corner rooms have more windows but more useless space than the rest, thus are bigger. Oh yeah Oi is claiming the top right room. Oh yeah the rooms at the top of the plan have a view to die for over the loch.

Info for new student in Liye Andrac (the flat tail).
Getting there: Most people fly into Lactia international outside Tel, which is chaotic, even by calie standards on the ground side. Calie customs are minimal and visas are rarely required, as most things are legal in Cal, smuggling things into Cal is an utterly pointless operation as in most cases as the odds are you can buy it at the local corner shop anyway.
Then the mag-lev link to Tel is well sign posted, but most people find it by mistakes as they get pushed there by the crowds, from the airport to Vavlia station (Tel's main station) is a short trip and the CAT trains level heading either north/south or east/west very regularly. Liye Andrac is south, so getting a south bound CAT (Calitua Aratually Transitory, a sleek high speed system, two deck carriages are used on the north south route) train (usually platform C-2) will get you to there in an hour or so, providing they get off at the first stop.
When it comes to larger items of luggage most students use the cheap freight service that the university unions manage. If a 1x2x3 meter container can get to one of Cals numerous ports it can be got to where the student is living very cheaply.
The universities: The University of Liye Andrac is, mostly in the medieval old city, though parts of it are scattered through out the city. The University of Liye Andrac has two centres of excellence, The Acime Institute (AI and IT), in the new city and The Queens Collage of Art (Fine Art and Art) though it does have a well thought of medical school and is viewed as one of Cals premier universities in most subjects.
Cualtian Tule University is a far less academic university than the University of Liye Andrac, but is well thought of in business and more practical subjects. It is also close to being a centre of excellence in the fields of agriculture and mechanical/civil engineering, more so than the University of Liye Andrac. It has it's campus on the outskirts of the city that is well serviced by the trams. No one lives on campus, preferring to live in the city.
Tancin University, well it is really just the local uni for mediocre students, there is no reason a foreign student would go there.
Financing: Cal has numerous knock for knock deals with foreign governments and pays for the tuition of students from nations that agree the same and provides grants to students from governments that provide the same to Calie students or that provide for their well being in some other way.
For students that don't come from such a government, many of the Calie corps will pay the fees and provide grants for talented students in exchange for the working for them in summer and working for them on graduation. It is normally a two year deal after graduation. Students can self finance if they wish, but this is rare to unknown for Calie students that, no matter how rich they are or family is, get funded.
The City: Liye Andrac is Teu's capitol city and has been inhabited for as far as Calie history goes back and beyond. The old city is between the castle and henge (stone circle). It is of a fish bone city, the bulk of it being made out of 'lands' , heavy stone built buildings built around a courtyard, usually five or six stories high. Though due to the hilly terrain some can be as tall as ten stories on one side. None have entrances at the front and to gain access means going down one of the many venals that run off the high street. The old city was built with defence in mind so none of the streets are straight and the many stairways are always uneven. The lands themselves provide for a good amount of protection as their outer walls are thick and have no access from anywhere but their one entrance.
The New City is neoclassical and layed out in a grid pattern, how ever this planned layout falls to bits when the city centre is left. It must also be noted that Liye Andrac was with in living memory two cities Andrac the old and new city and Liye the port.
The City of course now spreads far beyond the new and old cities and Liye, but is very densely populated and like most of cal is not car friendly in the least. But personal transit it free due to the free tram network (note: Calie trams are not street cars and bare more resemblance to light rail, some of them even transport light and small scale freight, such as the students heavier items of luggage).
The People: Liye Andrac's population is overwhelmingly vulpine, and has no human population to speak. The people are fairly accepting of outsiders, well trade is the life blood of the place. Only the Telen are more willing to try and make a buck out of any situation.
It must also be noted that like almost all calie they have no issue with nudity and will not bat an eyelid if a naked fur wonders past. They might pay attention if it is of a kind that they are not familiar with and well a human would get attention no matter how much or little they wore.
--- OOC: I reckon this is about all a student coming to Cal would have looked up, well other than their course details and perhaps a visit. Read the last couple of posts in the 'flat tail' thread and turn up where they are. They are looking for flatmates.
Oh yeah the green furs are the most likely to draw attention as they are unique to this part of the fed.

The Flat mates (Calie)
Name: Talen Trailinson Age: 18 Sex: Female Studying: Medicine Home town: Ril, Isle of Trilan, Sae, KC Description: A six foot six lupine of a some what statuesque build (built like a brick sh*t house)
Family: Second Eldest of six siblings. Both parents still alive and happily married. Her youngest brother has mental problems and she has got accustomed to dealing with people who are very emotional. She has had to muck in an effectively raise the other younger of her siblings as her youngest brother has taken up most of her parents time and her older sister if much older than her.
Details: Talen is a little bossy and tends to take control of any situation. She is old beyond her years due to her family situation and very responsible. She is also very down to earth and for the first time is with out responsibilities.
She is an utter bibliophile and has a huge library of books that she treasures. She does tend to dress in a manner that does not suit her build, mussels and flowery dresses really don't work.
She is from the main settlement on a very small island and this is her first time in a big city but she is mature enough to deal with this.
Hobbies: Reading, Rugby, Knitting, Sewing and painting (she is not very good at the last three)
(ooc: Furniture char, feel free to play with as much as you like)
Name: An rew Traliano of the rewna tribe. Age: 20 Sex: Male Studying: : Fashion and design Home town: None (desert drewn nomad) Description: Not much can be said about Traliano appearance as he always covers himself head to foot, even though that is not normal for a desert drewn though he does do it with style. It is clear that he is short, five foot three and from what fur is visible, a desert fox. He walks with a limp, but like all desert drewn takes his disability stooically.
Family: The youngest of three brothers, two who are still alive. His patients are separated and he has spent a large amount of his life with his uncle that effectively adopted him as his own as he was infertile.
Details: Traliano smokes massive amounts of hash, though this does not seem to have to much of an adverse effect on him. His Calie is fairly bad and it takes him time to translate from his native desert tongue.
What exactly happened to him is unclear but since Cal has had a recent civil war it is quiet possible something happened then.
Hobbies: Sewing (ooc: Play with, but I do have a bit of a plan for him...how he got the way he is. Oh yeah he is horribly burnt under his clothes, not something that you would ever want to see.)
Name: Tea Ah en Age: 16 Sex: Female Studying: : Computer Science Home Town: Asylum, sanctuary, KC
Description: Ah is a medium hight hybe (being about five foot eleven), a vulpine/teerie hybe, she has the colouring of a teerie and the bushy tail but her body shape and facial characteristics are vulpine.
Family: An only child from a teerie mother and vulpine father. Her parents moved to sanitary after she was born as they thought it the best place to bring up a Hybe, prejudice still exists. Her father runs a small ISP, though her mother deals with most of the business leaving her father to deal with the technical aspects. Her mother has always taught here to never be ashamed of what she is, her father has always been much more protective.
Details: Ah at the age of four was found to be 'out of control', not that she was disruptive, just her parents were told she was going to do what she wanted to do. Though good parenting Ah has never wanted to do anything too bad (well other than cracking sanctuary's road tax evaders database and having the head teachers car crushed no less than five times (they could never pin it on her)). She has been skipped a head many years at school, partially due to her massive intelligence and partly due to the teachers wanting her out of their life's (There are only so many times you can spend a night in a police cell due to computer error before you get a little annoyed). She has worked for the year before going to uni as her father thought her too young to go to uni before sixteen, in truth he did not want to let her go until his wife told him she was going.
She is a genius of massive proportions, but tends to hide it. Her young age does make her a tad immature at times. She has only recently even started noticing males.
Hobbies: All things tech related, cycling, animi, comics, kiteing, politics. (ooc: play with this yin, not sure what to do with her.)
Name: Oi Age:20 Sex: Female Studying: Sculpture Home town: Ac, Tia, Teer, KC Description: Oi is a tall teerie, six foot six, but skinny as all teerie are. She has long hair and is quite normal for a teerie.
Family: Oi does not speak much of her family, if at all. She does had a grand aunt who she does not get on with, but other than that she has never talked of her family.
Details: Oi is outward going in apparent nature but is as hard as nails under it all. She is a consummate craftsfur and possibly hyperactive as she rarely sits still. She has a habit of forgetting to dress and tends to be oblivious to her own nudity to the level she tends to put her com in a tail bag (no one in there right mind steels from a teerie (or any other skunk) when they are directly in 'firing range') just so she doesn't forget it, clothes on the other hand....well. When she does dress it's usually in a very utilitarian manner, combats and a tee shirt.
Oi is very secretive about her family and will change the subject when it is brought up quietly. She is easy going, if a little intense and over active.
Hobbies: wood work, furniture building, whittling, flute playing.
