Here's my shot at this:
Name of your Nation: Federated Communities of Spendor
Type of Government: "Fractal" Federal Republic (it looks nearly the same at every scale)
Powers split between Westminster style national parliament
& constituent provinces (20 currently; more as the populace grows).
Chancellor of Spendor University serves as Head of State
National legislature: Bicameral, Senate & Federal Assembly
Executive power resides with the Assembly President & Cabinet,
chosen from members of the Federal Assembly
Senate has approval authority over all legislative measures
Political Leaders:
University Chancellor: Lars Horsted (lupine)
Assembly President: Orem Whitfor (murine)
Provost of the Senate: Ginnad Ath'ord (procyonine)
Major Cabinet Bureaux:
Treasury: Ingra Lostrop (vulpine)
Community: Triand Legrudi (cervine)
Diplomacy: Trast Zorano (canine)
Defense: Erkort Vinlan (pardine)
Justice: Herat Gryon (feline)
Interior: Yvorid Targast (leporine)
Agriculture: Rutar Ergodisi (mephitine)
Commerce: Klidre Ryndor (sciurine)
Technology: Dexrind Rambix (murine)
Population: 250 M
Population Composition: (great mix)
Major races: (> 5%)
Leporine: 10%
Vulpine: 10%
Murine: 10%
Sciurine: 8%
Canine: 7%
Lupine: 6%
Mephitine: 6%
Minor races: (≤ 5%)
Musteline: 5%
Lutrine: 5%
Procyonine: 5%
Cervine: 4%
Feline: 4%
Equine: 3%
Bovine: 3%
Anatine: 3% (only prominent avians)
Ursine: 2% (recent immigrants)
Pardine: 2%
Macropodine: 2% (recent immigrants)
Others (< 1% each): 5% remainder
Major Cultures:
Semi-urban/agrarian
Dense urban
Nomadic/transient
Major Religions:
Monotheistic based on creator/guardian/judge
Natural spiritualistic based on environmental forces
Contemplative philosophical
-Military-
Volunteer only? Yes
Mandatory Service? No, but voting & holding political office require defense service of 5 years.
Military strengths:
Closely integrated combined-arms teams (ground/air/support units)
Well-developed submarine & hovercraft technology
High power density electronics make Gauss guns & lasers primary small arms
Military weaknesses:
Limited endurance; short logistics train
Units attached to provinces, thus slow to mobilize unless there is an imminent threat
Most members serve 1 term, then pursue other careers
No large surface warfare ships or long-range aircraft
Nuclear weapons? Yes, small-yield, only for deterrence & retaliatory strike
Biological weapons? No & committed to non-development
Chemical weapons? No, but reserves the right to develop
Space based weapons? Yes, but none deployed on orbit
-Technology-
Relative technology level- mid 21st Century, but many vestiges of past levels are present
Technological advantage:
Advanced battery technology, making electric locomotion more economical than fuel combustion
Practical superconductors, allowing low-cost distribution of electricity & mag-lev transit
Technological disadvantage:
Practically no development of hydrocarbon combustion engines;
this limits capabilities of long-distance flight (jet aircraft) &
space-launch vehicles (rockets) use only hydrogen as a propellant.
Poor development of explosives, including gunpowder, nitroglycerin, etc.
Internet access: Nearly ubiquitous
Dominant Transportation Methods:
Efficient monorail system, passenger & freight, connects all provinces
Private electric vehicles are more prominent in less-urbanized areas
Air travel is only on a limited scale; mostly helicopters
Television access: Good, 2 primary broadcasters, 10 specialty broadcasters
-Style-
I'm new to this, so I'd like to experiment with any level of RP.
-History-
Spendor University started out in a remote location, to preserve the knowledge during a "dark" period, akin to a monastery. As barbarian hordes started to kill each other off & settle down, the university began to open to having more students than just enough to replenish older members. A community began to develop outside the "walls", but the university maintained governance over the area. Eventually, as crafts & trade expanded, this became less practical, and local councils were formed, subordinate to the university, to manage local affairs. As the small community expanded into a network of towns, a federated system grew, where executive powers were transferred from the university, which found the growing system distracting from its goals, to local councils, which had a better idea of what was needed in their communities. A centralized Federal Assembly was created, as each satellite community still wish to maintain strong connections to the university. A second body, Senate, modeled after its Roman namesake, is comprised of prominent university members. Over time, legislative & fiscal powers were transferred to the Federal Assembly & Senate. Being located in an area where many various hordes looted the countryside, the citizens were preoccupied with defense as much as learning. As power devolved to the populace, it was established that enfranchisement required having served for a period in defense
of the communities.
-Relations to other nations-
Spendor is a group of communities with numerous species, none comprising a majority, and welcomes peaceful exchanges of knowledge & goods with neighbors, but remains suspicious about possible hostile intrusions, based on its history witnessing the ravages of horde warfare and taking in many, who came not just to learn, but also to escape marauding raiders.
-Give 3 interesting facts about your nation that gives it character:
1. Like the nation, no province has a majority race; 3 have significant pluralities: 1 canine, 1 murine, 1 leporine.
2. Voting & holding political office require having served 1 term in the defense forces (and not current serving); otherwise, making class distinctions between veterans & civilians is frowned upon.
3. Libertarian society, traditionally mistrusting centralized control; races have mixed so often that there have been no significant factions based on race, which takes immigrants some time in getting used to (as they tend to stick together initially).
Main Exports:
Grains (wheat, barley, flax) & derivative products (bread, pasta, beer)
Copper: ore, refined, & finished products
Electric batteries
Motion pictures & books (numerous genres & formats)
Primary Requirements:
Iron: ore & refined
Cotton: raw & spun
Petroleum & derivative products
Explosives (primarily for construction)
