OC: Open to all but probably more of interest to the southern states
Sea page Tal Durien en of the fisheries protection corvette the HMS Deep Dunk was asked by here sonar operator to have a look at some thing. They were far out at sea checking up on the fish stocks and generally checking the health of the southern ocean.
Ever since the more advanced sonar of the new corvettes had come into operation they had started picking up large sea creatures. They had no idea what they were, or where they came from, but they didn't affect the fish stocks and were left alone. The Calie were aware that some thing was out there but they left it alone.
This time it was different, it was not a single contact, but a multiple one, the active sonar showed no less than fifteen of them...sixteen of them. They were heading toward Cal, but at this point were far off the shore of neamat.
What ever they were they appeared to be migrating, the passive sonar was picking up odd sounds, as if they were communicating. This was very odd.
Durien thinks for a second, then says "I s'pose we had better call this in."
The sonar operator nods it was definitely worth calling in and investigating more.
Like many of the Nat class corvettes the HMS Deep Dunk could operate under sail and was at the time. Durien gives the order "Power to engines, drop the sails and bring in the outriggers."
The corvette moved from sail to internal power quickly, and it's engines kicked in. The sonar operator calls Durien over as the contacts scattered. It was apparent that they could not detect the active sonar but could hear the engines. Durien thinks for a second the gives the order "Engines off, raise sail"
The vulpine crew were quickly re-attaching the sails and the out riggers were deployed. What ever they were following was organic and quite aware. A few hours past as they searched until they found a group of twenty of the things and stayed above them.
"Mam we have one suffusing close by" the sonar operator says.
Durien asks "Where?"
"Port about three o'clock"
Durien looks out over the sea and in the distance sees a serpentine head come up for a second before going down. The sonar operator says "I think they have seen us, the passive sonar is going nuts!"
Durien says "send our data to the admiralty, I don't think they are violent but I suspect we will lose them soon"
She was right as many surfaced for a second and dived beyond the range of their sonar.

Back in Cal Supreme Sea Lord Za was looking at the reports, some thing was going on. He was not sure what but a large number of contacts had been made by fisheries protection corvettes with large aquatic creatures. They all seemed to be heading toward the eastern gulf. He had ordered to be told the minute one tripped Cals sonar net.
He put a request to the other SOTO nations for any intelligence they might have and other than legends of sea serpents laying there eggs in the gulf he had no idea what was going on.
