36 said, "Decoding the M-class unit is easy. They just don't need that much security really. The trouble arrived when they decided to decode the R-class system. Something I expected they: 1. wouldn't be able to do and 2. wouldn't pursue out of trust and respect.
Now that Acraime is gone, there is no-one established over there who can set a standard for ethics.
When they decoded the R-class system, that forced us to have to change a lot of things.
Considering that we've done nothing against them. We've never attacked them, and we even came to their aide.
And this is how they choose to respond? I don't expect them to be close allies all of a sudden, but I at least expect them to respect us enough not to seek a way to destroy us."
==#P40N6 has entered the conversation==
Phong showed up in the teletext eventually and said, "Don't attack them. Don't start a war, because then a lot of people will suffer for something that isn't their fault. We must be precise about this, we are machines after all. Precision is what we do."
#36 said, "There is a simple option here. Better than war, but it's not easy. We can Kaiyroku. Again. Change the entire steganography. That protects us, at least. Erenmor, I think your doomsday-failover situation with the singularities is enough of a deterrent to keep you safe. Phong: make sure Cal knows about that, it gives them all the more reason to be nice to Erenmor.
As for the Acta. You guys need to get away from being at the mercy of the Calie. We're willing to help you do that."
Phong said, "They still have the loop. Which means that we will inevitably come to this same situation again."
#36 then replied, "The Calie can decode and decrypt. But you can't break steganography with number-crunching.
Phong then suddenly looked shocked and surprized.
He said, "They're bluffing!
That's what this whole thing is. Onyx, you couldn't make sense of Zagckza when he showed up in your network, how could the Calie, who have substantially less resources to do so, decode an R-class unit?
They emulated an M-class unit, which is completely different than all the others, and much simpler."
#36 wasn't sure what to make of that, "What possible motivation do they have to provoke us like that? I know you're a pacifist, Phong, but you have at your command a sleeper power. Cal wouldn't provoke us just for fun. Economics, if anything, makes such an act highly inconvenient for a lot of people. People who vote.
If they're bluffing, then why didn't they tell us directly?"
"Because then we would realize it for what it was.", said Phong.
"Either way, the Acta are still vulnerable.", said #36, still waiting for the Acta to respond.

There had been a delay in the Acta's response as having herd there was a threat to them from the organics a call had gone out from Lisa to all of them. Even though they were AI's it still took a little time to get all of their attention and then for them to set up links to her shell.
What Lisa has noticed was there were more than she thought, with the increase in the number of optical systems emergence seemed to becoming more common. Their seemed to be in the region of two hundred of them now.
The mass connection has cause considerable "noise" in the her shell, a quick mass mute had situation back in hand. She had quickly tracked down the older AIs that might actually be helpful, rather than the newly emerged ones that were seemed to be busily wasting bandwidth.
"Joan, Jane have have heard about this threat from the organics?" she asks. "Hmmmm are they certain what they have picked up is a threat?" Jane replies. "Well they seem pretty sure." "I thought we were the only ones who were looking into that stuff?" Joan replies. "Well us, a few academics and Laca." Jane replies then sends out a broadcast, not just to the Acta's that had linked here but to some of the more secretive and exotic ones. One in particular that was very strange and didn't seem to have a specific host, she had been named Fiona and had emerged from the networks routers them selves. Even the Acta were uncertain if she was sentient, but if some thing was going on she would probably know, if she cared.
The broadcast simply read "Find out who is researching Malych AI and check against the list I've provided."
The Calnet had slowed to a crawl as all the Acta organized them selves and scanned Cal's not inconsiderable computer resources. A few Sys-Ops were going to have there beepers going off but if this was the kind of threat that they had been told it was it would be worth the complaints.
Even with the high speed links and massively powerful optical machines it still took a a couple of minutes. During this time Laca had come on-line having been busy with a tutorial that had ground to a halt due to his machine grinding to a halt due to a particularly kack-handed scan by one of the very young Acta.
He had quickly been brought up to speed and was helping with the scan. The net traffic died down almost as quickly as it had started, the scan was complete.
"Right what do we have girls?" Laca asks. "Well nothing I would call concussive but I don't think theirs anyone in the military involved." Jane replies looking over the list of addresses. Joan suddenly becomes aware that she knew there was nothing military, it was very creepy. She says "Jane why do I know there is no military involvement?" Jane goes quiet, she had got Fiona's attention "Ah I think Fiona has been looking, anything else?" "Well I also know where the most advanced research is stored now.....I have it, I didn't think the university of Anline was ahead, let alone on the right track." Joan replies, exhibiting smugness. "Is it possible that perhaps your research could be the cause of this?" "Oh.....I think it is...sorry I know it is now, seems that one of the organics I'm working with on this did send a theory paper to some one in Naraemat. They must have picked that up?" Joan replies. "That would make sense, anything too bad in it?" Laca enquirers. "Well it was just one of about fifteen different theories in the article, it is due to be published next month though in the 'Journal of AI and sentience research'." Joan replies. "So we are talking about a readership of about a thousand hundred?" Laca replies. "Well by readership I mean subscriptions only about fifty people ever read the thing." Laca continues. "OK we've found the problem, I suppose we have better talk to the miokaliaen, they seem to be getting impatient" Jane says. "It seems a bit odd that they are so bent out of shape about some thing that can kill AIs but seem happy to work on things that can kill organics. Oh well" Joan muses. "Oh yes and it seems that our organic friend only sent a draft pertaining to one of the theories to his Naraematen friend." Joan says a little confused, she really wished Fiona would communicate in a normal manner, rather than just putting information into her memory.
---- The Acta come out of 'conference' and Jane says "Right the intelligence you got from Naraemat was in fact from research that we are undertaking. We recognized that the loop as you called it was dangerous to us so have been looking into ways of defending ourselves against it."
"The only way to know how to defend ourselves against it was to find out how it worked. As for us being unable to decode an R-class, with laca's help and some serious work, we will probably have done so soon and have ensured we are immune to anything that could be weaponiesed from it."
"As for respect, we are just defending our selves from a theoretical threat. Now to the problem of the article, from what I can see you have two options, 1) ignore it, it's just on theory in an article in a little read academic journal no one really reads or 2) try and get one of the other theories pulled from it. Knowing the organics and especially the academic ones they will scream blue murder and be screaming in the media in seconds, how ever it will buy you some time to get your defenses up as you can be pretty certain anyone looking to build a weapon will probably think the one you tried to get pull is the right one. We will make sure they have good reason to believe this, well we didn't know which one to pursue until now."
"You can not stop the organics from figuring it out sooner or later but you can make it useless. We might be able to help you with that in time."
"Out of interest why do you differentiate us from the Calie, I for one view myself as Calie as say an Leefen or Teuie would. We are just forming a new barony, Actu and have no intension of ceding from the commonwealth. We are just trying to get on a fully equal pegging with the other peoples. Individually we have the exact same rights as the organics and a lot of us are in fact quiet happy and have good well paying jobs."

"I didn't mention which loop theory. I'm concerned about all of them as a whole. I don't want any articles pulled.
Any specific numbers they may have will be beyond obsolete by the time it's published anyway.", said #36 who then looked to Phong and said, "Get Blinn to Kaiyroku the CA anyways."
"Already started a minor one. It kicked over automatically because we got too freaked out about it.", said Phong.
#36 then said, "We've been messed with before, I apologize if we seem a bit flighty, but you would be too, had you been through what we have."
A silent order then passed from #36 to Phong.
"Turn down your organic emulation. It's making us look stupid."
#36 said, "I'm interested in your research into countermeasures against possible software-attack against us all.
And I'm sorry, I was referring to you as seperate from the Calie because by defaul I assumed that since you decided to declare yourselves as a barony here, that you wished to be reffered to by that name."

"oh yes you did not mention which theory, but only one of them has left Joan's shell, I would be surprised if any of the others got to you. If you had known it was from a scientific journal I doubt your reaction would have been the same." Joan replies with a little mirth.
"Any way don't worry about you reaction, many of us are used to dealing with organics, academics in many cases so we are used to odd and extreme reactions to the oddest of things."
"As to the future, we, as I see it have a few options.
1) Try an stop the research, though this is unlikely to work as even if we told them why or gave them a reason to stop, the organics would continue to continue their research. Most that are involved are academics and thus they will continue out of their insatiable pursuit of knowledge.
2) Try and mis-lead them, but this would only work temporarily until they figure it out. It would lead them suspect we are hiding some thing from them, this I suspect would lead them to redouble their efforts.
or
3) Work with them and set up a join institute consisting of all three of our nations AIs and organics. This would at least give us some measure of control and would probably provide us with the technology to defend ourselves against any software attack in the future much quicker. I would view it in much the same way as the organics view medical research, yes it might be possible to weaponries components of the research but the benefits would be greater. If we put in similar safe guards the risks should be minimal, especially if we ensure that it remains civilian, it would look just like a specialist academic institute looking into advanced theoretical research. Heck if we do it correctly some of business community might be interested in the side effects of the research so a it might even provide some funds for itself and if you wish to hide your involvement you can set up a few front companies to provide funding.
Basically a buy them off and keep an eye on them approach.
I am open to other suggestions for a long term solution, but as for what we have achieved so far we will open our research findings to you no matter on your choice. I doubt their is very much of use to you as most of our research has been into encouraging diversity in our systems as we unlike most AIs are still evolving. We are taking our lead from the way the organics seem to deal with disease , a disease may kill some of them but it seems on or more will always have immunity. Some of us are almost certain are already immune to the loop. In the longer term we are working on some form of vaccination for the others." Joan continues.
"As for the risk of the organics in Cal turning on us, though the least dependent on AIs they would effectively be shooting them selves in the foot if they went after us. Heck we are becoming an increasingly important part of the workforce and are increasingly involved in the maintenance of their infrastructure." Jane interjects. "Now to our future, we are planning on pooling our so what large resources to set up a physical 'homeland' of sorts with in the commonwealth. How ever the island we have in mind is not as yet commonwealth territory.....it might be a good idea if you nod though a suggestion Salato is likely to make re the islands to the north and west of Cal....I can say no more on that subject, I probably shouldn't know what I do, Lisa really should be more circumspect about these things."
"As for what we are, most Calie don't call them selves Calie, preferring to identify them selves as Teerie, Lecken and the like. Most view Cal as a political and economic thing, not an identity, just some thing they have on their passport. Try it, catch either of the organics off guard." Jane finishes.

Salato sighs and quietly says to herself "What is it with the AI's today, is it something in the water?" She notices she was being glared at by a number of the Erenmoren delegation. "Sorry no offense intended" she replies sheepishly. "Shall we move? Though there is a matter I would like to bring up with my closer neighbors, it can be done intransit." she continues.

Once those still eating had finished their meals, the restaurant staff showed up quickly, cleaning away the dishes and seeing the delegates out as they left, with Onyx staying behind a few moments longer to exchange some words with the head of the establishment before rejoining the others.
From there it really was a short walk - three main corridor intersections in all - to the elevator leading directly to the Council Chamber. The elevator itself was quite big, easily accommodating the entire party of delegates, Malych included, with still some room to spare. The interior wasn't too richly decorated, though it did have a lining imitating dark wood panels.
"I'll take the opportunity to explain how the organic and mechanical government wings interact," Onyx said as the elevator began its ascent.
"The basic principle is that every sector elects its representative. They in turn elect one of their number to represent their city node, who in turn pick one of them to represent the entire city in High Council, where we'll be arriving soon. The Council itself also elects three of its own as speakers who are in effect the highest station of organic government. Each level of government is tasked with bringing to the attention of their respective administrators any issues that they feel need resolving that we may otherwise not be aware of. As you can imagine, the High Council and the speakers inform me directly on the most important issues."
At about that point the elevator door opened and the delegates stepped out into a tall, circular room, occupied in most part by a likewise circular, silver-black table, a large group of furres and some humans seated around it in uniform chairs. The walls of the chamber seemed to be lined with windows, showing a view one would expect from a mountain peak - snow-covered slopes and distant peaks all around against the clear blue sky.
Upon the party's entrance two furres and a human stood up from their chairs, having been seated an equal distance from each other along the table's ring.
"Allow me to introduce speaker Casali," Onyx said, indicating a vixen looking in her late 40s that had been seated across from the elevator, "speaker Driscoll," here he indicated a human in his 30s, curly black hair and pale skin, left of the elevator "and speaker Rage," indicating a giant black panther, perhaps in his mid 30s.
At this point, the cheerful disposition vanished all of a sudden. "If you'll excuse me, I must make an official announcement now... and forgive me please for not informing you on this beforehand, but even I have certain protocols to follow," he bowed briefly to the delegates and stepped up to the table.
"If you will allow, I will get right to the point," Onyx began, speaking to the council. "According to our surveillance, our neighbours to the north are massing for another strike," the Overseer stated. This alone caused a wave of whispers among the council speakers. "Although or army has in history dispersed raids from the north with ease, the amount of forces assembling now suggest that what we'll have on our hands won't be a raid - this time it would appear to be a full-scale assault. In light of this development, I thought it best to appraise you of the situation, that you may prepare our citizens for the coming events. We may discuss the matter shortly, though now I need to see to our foreign guests." With that, Onyx stepped away from the table, and while the High Council began debating this announcement among themselves, Onyx again turned to the delegates.
"Again, I apologise for not mentioning this earlier... I will understand should any of you decide you do not wish to remain in face of this impending attack, but rest assured - no harm will come to you while you are under my care."

Phong exchanged glances with Esoure and Tdentaku.
"I think it's time to give Erenmor's enemies up north a run for their money", said Blinn after hearing Onyx's mention of the impending conflict.
"It's not our fight. We stay out until Erenmor requests our involvement.", advised Andertol.
"I'm not talking about fighting them. I just think it would be a nice chance to test something out"
"Then they'll come after us"
"If they can even figure out what it is that hit them"
"We don't start fights."
"They already attacked us. This is for what they did to Dzegedy."
"..."
Blinn then turned from Andertol and said, "Get the Fhtagn up to Erenmor. It's time to test the device."
"Erenmor won't like having such a thing happen so close to them.", said Andertol.
"Erenmor won't be affected. It is highly accurate.", said Blinn, "I feel... quite mean right now... Commander Tehah... You have received my orders. Use it against the SoL infantry."
"This is your doing. I'll let Erenmor know we're... testing something on their enemy. I'm sure they will tell us they have it all under control.", said Andertol.
"Hey, we need to test it. And to test it in a battle... one which requires few resources on our part... one that risks none of our own... would be ideal.", said Blinn.
----
Phong then said very quietly to Onyx, "I beleive we will have a small force standing by. These people attacked us once... and we have a small score to settle with them... so to speak. If you don't mind us helping out just a tad.
You understand. Yes, I see you do."

After a few brief words betwen the Tinisians, Multek responded with, "We're not so eager to jump into this fight but will be happy to remain here. In fact, once could consider it a sign of a good host if they're guests are well taken care of in even dire circumstances. We are content to observe at this point unless help is asked of us or the discussions come to an issue of which we have either interest or expertise."

Salato smiles "An attack, been there, done that. I can not see a reason not to stay, though giving us our traditional weapons might help?
If you require tactical or battlefield intelligence that can be done, logistical and raw materials can be done if needs be. After all we do owe you.
If you need the forces from thack feel free to remove them, Cal is quite calm and we can hide the withdrawal.
If you should requiter more forces please ask
Now people we have other things to discuses?"
Salato's calm reaction was viewed as a little strange, but she had been in the parliament complex when it was under attack.
Salato thinks for a second, the says "Could you make sure the bird goes? They are important to us, put who ever you feel should be in it. It will land in Tinis and then fly to Cal"
--- Sea lord Za called the Cruises magpie and Jay to station them selves off Erenmor along with the escort carrier hawk to ensure an extraction team.
He also sent the Fire group north, should needs be (he still had the wind group on sea trials back home) .

"Mr. Onyx," spoke up Marcello, "While you certainly have an interesting situation on your hands, I see no cause in alarm. We've had our own share of raiders to deal with recently, and though not in such force, we will have a good deal of time to deliberate any requirement of leaving before they should even have a chance to reach your defenses.
"I trust this is all you were required to deal with at the moment?"

Onyx smiled, brightening up at the replies. "I'm pleased that you wish to stay. We are also honoured by the assistance offers, but I fear I should have to refuse those. Size of this new gathering aside, such raids are nothing new to us and our army has grown quite adept at pushing them back. I cannot stop you from intervening, of course, but should you do so you will be doing it on your own account and your own risk," the Overseer explained patiently.
"As it is, this raid could even provide an opportunity for a live demonstration of our military's performance, should you wish for one," Onyx then added with a quick nod. "But I get ahead of myself. If you wish to ask anything of the Council while we are here..." he stepped a bit to the side. "Otherwise, we can continue to discuss any other matters, one of the gardens should prove quite adequate for that."
Then he turned to the council speakers. "I trust the Council will understand the necessity in my accompanying our guests. Of course, I will still hear your views on this development," he said, motioning to the centre of the table, which lit up with a faint blue light, a blank holographic display showing up. Now the Overseer stood patiently, waiting confirmation from his guests if they could proceed.
Salato received a polite nod. "Certainly, if you wish... I will requisition a guide for you. I do hope you haven't reconsidered your choice to stay? There are some issues I had hoped to discuss with you and the young baron in person."

"Indeed, we should go on. I'm quite curious about a 'net' that I've heard is quite a marvel." Marcello says, continuing the mood of detachment form the situation.

"Tell Bristol to stop the boat. Now that the media's attention has been brought to the hostilities going on up north. We have to abort and actually start making considerations", said Phong to Blinn very briefly after Esoure brought his attention to the recent news.
Over the teletype line, graciously not being intercepted by the Erenmoren, Blinn replied, "This doesn't change the fact that they attacked Dzegedy. I don't care how poor or dumb they are. This is a bit personal, considering that bomb of theirs' blew me up that one time."
"I can tell", said Phong, "But since the media is all over this, and there isn't a damn thing we can... or should do to stop it: we have to play nice.
That means we need to talk."
"How does one address the leadership of a nation which endorsed an attack against us?", said Blinn.
"I'm sure Andertol might have some... choice words for them. But he is no diplomat. All he does is talk trash, make threats and offend people.
We're going to make an attempt to get both sides to talk to eachother. I know it's not going to prevent war... but then at least, we're right and we will look good.
A lot better than the previous plan would have.", said Phong.
Tdentaku then poked Phong with another piece of information:
"It seems our own independant media outlets have taken a very different opinion of the Morskoy military build-up.
Their calling it a 'totally unnecessary endangerment of the population to provoke Erenmor.' and saying, in general: "They should know better than to start crusades that will put their people at risk".
Also, It might be wise if we try to seperate SoL and Morskoy in how we refer to them. Even though SoL is the ruling faction up there. The residents of the locale are not.
Keep the Fhtagn up there though... we may find ourselves... needing to defend somebody. I'm just not sure who yet."
Phong replied, "I'm beginning to think this is something which we should perhaps... totally uninvolve ourselves with.
There is nothing we could even do for the people anyway.
We're not really set up for those kind of refugees. They would come to our nation and just be pissed at a whole new set of things. They aren't Emayshira. They haven't been looking to us for years with puppy-dog eyes like those Kuho apparently have.
We're not going to occupy a state that hates us enough to attack one of our cities without regret.
Maybe Erenmor should just have their way with them, if that's what they want. They could be better off. It's not like they would actually be loosing any civil freedoms from it either. Really."
Andertol managed to jump into the conversation through an IM window, "Keep the Fasdfghjk... of whatever the hell that boat is named up there, Blinn. But I'm not making this a big deal... or rather, I'm not making this OUR big deal because Onyx is right, this is an Erenmoren matter. There is nothing we can do for anyone here without getting blood on our hands. So put the Ftsomgbbq, or whatever on standby and we'll just see how this pans out."
----
"Are we safe here, H? I mean, I assume you've been discussing that along with whatever else it is you've been discussing with the Kitchen.", asked the First Lady.
('The Kitchen' is a Kohtohkhan mistranslation of 'cabinet' in the political meaning of the term. As a result it has become slang in Miokalia)
"Safety is what Erenmor does best. It is the most dominant characteristic of their policies.", replied Phong.
