The G.D. of Mustelia-Nivalia + The Rep. of Martays

Hi, I'm going to try and keep this simplified as possible and avoid tl;dr. Martays and the Niessan monarchies are closely linked historically so it's the most logical to dump them in the same thread. Also, nothing later on will make sense unless I put the history and relations first.

-History-

Short tl;dr version: The Niessan Monarchies (Mustelia & Nivalia as well as its vassal-puppets) declared independence from a fascist state (Martays) several centuries ago and remain in cold war. Long version below:

822: The martens of The First Kingdom of Martays invade their backwards neighbours, the weasel-stoat Niessan tribes inhabiting the peninsula to its east. The Kingdom (now more than tripled in size) then restyles itself as the Piliusan Empire, which lasts nearly a thousand years.

1740: The Piliusan War of Succession destabilises the empire, which is then restyled the Second Kingdom of Martays: a nominally semi-democratic monarchy.

1741: The new constitutional-monarchy lasts a single year before falling to a fascist coup d'état. The National [Armed] Republic of Martays-Niess is established under the Martaysan Patriotic-Socialist Party.

1741-45: In the wake of the fascist coup d'état, the long since modernised Niessans wage a four-year war of independence (allied with the Martaysan anti-fascist royalist insurgency) using the Martaysans' own technology against them. This results the the creation of two reactionary Niessan duchies: the Duchy of Mustelia and the Duchy of Nivalia & Freneta. The National Republic of Martays (minus the lost Niessan provinces) remains as a rump-state. Over a million Martaysan royalist refugees flee across the Niessan border into what would become known as "Sibel" (the Niessan word for "Pine Marten").

1781: The Duke of Mustelia, Padrigu I, inherits the seat of Nivalia & Freneta, causing the Mustelo-Nivalian Personal Union. The Grand Duchy of Mustelia, Nivalia & Freneta is created.

1783: Due to administrative difficulties in the newly massive Grand Duchy, Padrigu I's ruling house of Nessmor reorganises itself. Devolution is granted to the mainly Stoat-Niessan populations of Freneta and the ethnic Martaysan population of Sibel, as well as a to the semi-autonomous Lutréol region on the remote eastern coast. All three territories are handed over to minor members of the House of Nessmor and function as vassal-principalities. Mustelia and Nivalia remain in union as the Grand Duchy of Mustelia & Nivalia.

1783 on: The Niessan monarchies under the domination of Mustelo-Nivalia remain in a constant state of (mainly) cold war with Martays and its MPSP goverment. The Border between Martays and the two monarchist Principalities of Sibel and Freneta is currently a bunker-lined DMZ, although no full-scale military action has been seen since 1970.

-Relations to other nations-

The entire region has been cut off from just about all outside contact (much like pre-19th century real-world Japan), mainly due to being occupied in its ongoing cold-war. The Mustelo-Nivalian dominated monarchies remain in a very negative relationship with fascist Martays, which continues to claim their territory as its own historical dominion. The Principality of Sibel, despite being a Martaysan royalist exile-state, does not claim Martays, nor do the other monarchies, who only officially wish for continued independence.

*Since the principalities are run by royal family members, they are little more than glorified provinces of Mustelia-Nivalia.

*Although the Dukes have a history of favouring corporations in their realm, a very conservative Padrigu IV is looking to curb this and at the same time increase the decentralisation of civil liberties. In this way Mustelia-Nivalia is becoming more like a traditional (real world 16th-19th century) absolute monarchy, in which the King holds absolute political power but allows some limited economic and personal decentralisation.

*The flags of the monarchies are tricolours with the ducal standard of Mustelia. (eg: the flag of Mustelia-Nivalia is the yellow and white flag of Nivalia with the ducal flag superimposed). The four crowns represent (top to bottom): The imperial crown of the Piliusan Empire, the ducal crown of Mustelia, the ducal crown of Nivalia, and the Princes' crowns of the Principalities.

*The National Republic bans everything that can be banned, and enforces vegetarianism simply because it was an excuse to ban meat.

*Refugees regularly try to escape to the comparatively benevolent absolute monarchies to the east, despite risking execution if they are caught near the DMZ. In an effort to destabilise Martays, Mustelo-Nivalia offers titles of minor nobility to any Martaysan that escapes.

*Martays is closer to following "theoretical" fascism in that it is anticlerical and follows socialist economic ideals (from whence "national socialism" and the Martaysan Patriot-Socialist Party). It strongly resembles real-world regimes such as that of the DPRK and the GDR.

I must say this is all looking very shinny. My only questions are, is what does your tech advantage 'cold war situation forces tech progress' mean exactly as terms of hard technological development? Is it meaning that there's a hard push for R&D or more that the military is uniformly top of the line? Or something else?

More curious on this bit: Is there any notable history after the 18th century? Also, your map is very pretty. I'll do my best to do it justice when I incorporate it with the continental map. Any preferences as to where you end up?

By "cold war forcing progress" it simply means that compared to other technological domains, the military of both countries tends to be far more modernised. For example, genetics research is pretty much 19th century level whereas ballistics is modern.

As for the history of the 19th century, dunno, I may think of that later. Politically the region stayed the status quo, with long periods of cold-war and a few minor deadlock wars, no political upheavals or regime changes or anything. I focused on the 18th century mainly because these countries (especially the monarchies) are 18th century-style countries dragged kicking and screaming into modernity.

In terms of the map, a sport on the far eastern coast (northeast of Jarimia) would be a reasonable place to stick the peninsula onto.
