A few months ago now I messaged our admin dude about a couple changes and have not heard back. So... given that, and the fact that making the furry federation more awesome is always a good idea I'm going to propose a couple changes that don't require creation of new folders and the like.
1. Alternative Settings - As cramming as much as we do into the current state of things is getting very tricky to navigate and keep sensible, I would like to propose at least 2 alternative settings to the modern day one.
The first would be similar to the previously played in StarFurs thread. A future a couple hundred years from now where things went badly for pretty much everyone, and we're all stuck making do in space ships, on asteroids, and on moons. A few crazy people might live still on Earth underground but communication with them is tricky and travel to say hello even more so. Mars, Mercury, and Pluto would likely have colonies and might end up being the primary food producers due to having territory that its easy to build habitats all over. But anyway, threads of this setting should be labeled as SF in their title. So perhaps 'SF: What ever happened to Mimas?' or 'SF: The search for orange September' would be apt titles. Most activity would be in the Earth solar system, as for what ever reason FTL travel has gotten expensive or difficult. But! Travel beyond our star is still possible but likely something only a few have access too (major governments, maybe a really big corporation or two).
The second alternative setting would be very distant future, and might not even be based around our world or star system. I'd like to call this Universal Furs (or UF). Want things way beyond the fantastic? This might be the place for you! Ring world, Intelligent Planet Sized Computers, crazy space operas, having dinner with the King of Cosmos, pretty much anything goes and rule of cool will be the focus of the day. Sort of a Flash Gordon meets Star Trek (next gen vibe of anything is possible) type universe. Title tag would be UF as in 'UF: The lost planet of King Zarkun' or 'UF: Izixs turns 1 million'. As this alternative setting has no basis yet, it is kind of wide open. Also, it is not the same future as SF so things that happen in SF are not prologue to UF. So if everyone who happens to be a fox in the entire universe dies in SF due to a Sifian-Clown virus, there can still be foxes in UF.
Why bring in alternative settings? Two reason, first off, they provide for lovers of different set ups to have more fun and second, they can provide a gateway for any new future tech people whom want to participate to join in on our fun without having to meet the ooc requirements of no ultra planet death or reliance on space fleets to get their way in the modern era. In SF, Earth is already dead and the space fleets will be running on nearly empty, and UF neither has to be the case but neither does such constraints as plausibility in converting a star into a laser beam.
The sign up for both these alternative settings will be similar to the modern day sign up.
2. Recruiting! - I've been making a push to recruit people, be they on nationstates or not. As it currently is, limiting ourselves to the pool of people who are willing to play NationStates can be very limiting, so we should not discriminate between NS and non-NS people. So if you want more cool people to RP with here, find them anywhere you like!
That said... maybe we should have someone in charge of recruiting? Someone whom can both convince people to join a wacky furry themed rp community but is also able to help integrate them into the community. Energy is a plus, being able to communicate without bias or agenda the current status of the world is a bigger plus. My last year of grad school isn't helping me have the time to both mod and heavily recruit and having a mentor type person would help a great deal, as would having someone whom is creating new recruitment ideas and plans could help us grow. Also having someone designated to point to and ask how recruitment is going would make life easy. So, any volunteers?
3. Kind of related to my intro here... getting in contact with our founder/admin is slow at best. He's a great guy but having new folders for some of the alternative settings would be kind of nice. My abilities as moderator are very limited. So... I think we should consider migrating at some point to a new board. Keep the current set up functional and present, but have a new place for the posts of the future.
But! I don't want to make a decision like this by fiat, so I'd love some discussion on this possibility. The pro's and con's and all that.
4. Question: Should we keep the idea of a 'furry federation' the focus of our modern world setting? As is, its kind of ignored by pretty much everyone except occasionally me and one or two others.
Pro's:
Gets nations able to talk with minimal logistics-No need to create 15 posts before Lenord and Tod sit down to discuss diverting a river
Can be a place to help express international moods on things-So if 3 people are teaming up against 1 in one thread, people on the fur fed council could make statements for or against it, and thus that 1 might not feel quite so alone on issues
Can be used to establish rules of diplomacy and war-Assuming everyone agrees of course
Could be used for numerous plot points
Might be a good vessel/organization for planetary defense efforts
Con's:
The currently established furry federation is kind of incomplete-The charter as proposed was not really discussed or amended, so this would need either revisions or a total redo
There's confusion about if the passed resolutions still apply since the reboot-That's a big question, but the answer is probably not since a number of them were inspired by things that are no longer canon. But any reboot of the organization would probably swipe the slate clean anyway
What scope would the furry federation have?-Good question, and given the fierce independence of some nations having a wide scope would scare them off, while having to narrow a scope would discourage others from bothering
How do we get everyone involved in it?-Not entirely clear at this point
I'm highly in favor of keeping an organization called the Furry Federation around, but if its going to mean anything other than to just be a group of people who make statements that no one listens too, we should all decide what we want to have happen with it, if anything. I'd be ok with a reboot, which could be very fun in character. But! If we do that, I'd like to know at least a little on how it would turn out before we even bother as to RP for ages and then have it not work out to something is kind of lame.
That is all.
For now...
